First Russian works and trip to Paris (1908-1914)

After studying at the atelier of Léon Bakst in St. Petersburg, the young painter, still in his early twenties, left Vitebsk for Paris. There he discovered the idioms of the avant-garde movements and absorbed their fundamental qualities, reworking them with images drawn from Russian and Jewish folk tradition.
