Paris (1910-1912 )

In Paris Chagall took up residence in La Ruche. There, he joined the circle of avant-garde artists and intellectuals, including Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Amedeo Modigliani and the poets Blaise Cendrars, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Max Jacob. Chagall, ever open to modernity, experiments with a world of new forms upon his contact with cubism, without ever rejecting the expressionist significance of colour.
